Choosing a Domain Name

Domain names deserve a lot of consideration. In addition to being your address on the web, they will (at least, they should) appear on all of your advertising, your letterhead, packaging, vehicles, and products. You and your employees will verbally communicate your name, time and time again. Your "music on hold" system and any broadcast advertising you do should say your web address.

Choosing a domain name:
  1. Match Your Company Name: First, whenever possible, consider a name as close as possible to your company name.
  2. Describe Your Product or Service: Consider a name that describes your product or service as generically as possible (for example, Sites4Brokers.com for real estate or ProgrammerHelp.com for sophisticated programming services).
  3. "Dot-Com" Preferred: Names with .com suffixes are preferable to others. People are just so used to typing ".com" that they will often do so even after just reading your .net or other address.
  4. Abbreviations - Shorter is Not Necessarily Better: Abbreviations can work, though don't make a name shorter just for the sake of brevity. For example, yourdomainnameinc.com is actually easier to type in than yrdmnnminc.com.
  5. Geography: One thing missing on the Internet is a sense of geography. If you're trying to reach a particular geographic market, consider a name that reflects that market. For example, theBubbler.com is a reference to the word "bubbler," a Wisconsin term for "drinking fountain."
  6. Numbers and Number Acronyms: Consider using your toll-free phone number. For some businesses, such as mail order, this can make perfect sense.
